good advice from both dudes, and the only thing i can add is if the above advice doesnt fix it, check the continuity in the wiring.

: :usually a car this old the voltage reg. behind the inst. cluster is bad. They cost about $10-15. depending where you get them. If every thing is plugged in properly the only other thing is the sending uint itself. Replace the voltage reg. behend the inst. cluster anyway. Old ones will go out sooner or later anyway.
