Sorry boys, but SOME of them DO make noise, a kind of chunk-chunk-chunk as the clutches grab and release
as you turn a sharp low speed corner. The more performance-oriented rebuilds seem to do this more often,
as the tricks to make it live take away some of the Detroit mandated NVH requirements . It is not a metallic
noise, and you can feel it more than you can hear it. I'm talkin Traction-Lok rear here. Here's how to check it:
Put it in neutral, and jack both rear wheels off ground. Figure out some way to turn one wheel while holding other
stationary( I remove wheels, use a big buddy with a big breaker bar, and me with a 250ft-lb beam torque wrench).
Turn one wheel against the other until it slips. Did you hear the noise? How much torque did it take?(The more
the better in my book). As the differential wears, the torque needed to do this will decrease, and specs are
in Ford shop manual.
