It depends on what is causing the noise. Squeaks are more likely to be
irritating, but no immediate danger. Squeaks are a sign that something
needs a lube or is wearing.
A knock is two (or more)parts striking each other. That is not generally
supposed to happen. A knock needs attention to prevent failure.
Some examples are worn bushings at the top of the springs.
While not dangerous, two pieces of metal are making contact that should
not. Without the bushing to provide 'give' the metal is.
If the Shocks are worn, the upper control arm can make contact with a bumper
with every bup or dip. This is more of a danger, as you are losing contact
with the road. not so pronounced at low speeds, but a killer on the highway.
Worn or missing strut rod or swaybar bushings will directly affect handling.
Dangerous.
A worn or missing bushing in the steering system is dangerous at any speed.
If the ball joints are dry and worn to the point one of them can knock,
you risk a wheel collapsing. Check the shine on your hood as you pass by
after you go through the windshield.
Or you may just have a loose piece of junk in your trunk or on the floorboards.
Bushings are cheap. New skulls are not on the market.
