Ford stopped making the 289 in mid 1968. The 302 is identical to the 289 except that is was stroked 1/8 inch. If your trying to tell a block apart you have to read the stamp number. Same for the heads.
Check out a guy named Dave Hammar. His site gives tips on how to read stamped numbers on the block and heads and for that matter all ford parts.
