I had a similiar problem. It ended up being a clogged fuel filter. Interesting thing was it was the rubber gas lines rotting from the inside that was clogging it. I might check for vacuum leaks too, and possibly it is leaking around the carb base plate gasket, it only takes a little leak to cause havoc. Easiest way i know to check besides a gauge is spray a non flammable substance,maybe WD 40 ( I think that is non flammable) if you are really brave use starting fluid and if you notice that the engine idles up when you spray that area then BINGO!! you found your gremlin.
