: as for actually work on the trans count me out
: However, I do have a ratchet shifter in my 74 IHC Scout.... basiclly, rather than just pulling the shifter down to the appropriate area for your gear selection, when you pull the lever it moves all the way down, and it moves only one gear, so to shift from 3rd to 1st you would pull the lever all the way down twice......... most of these shifters make it impossible to accidently hit reverse or nuetral (nice when drag racing or rockl climbing).
: if you want to get one of these shifters I would suggest NOT using the Holly Pro-matic 2, it has a plastic covered shift cable that has a tendancy to melt.. and a new cable is about $40.
: also if you have a bench seat in your mav then you wont be able to adjust the seat as far forward any more.

I have a Hurst shifter in The Comick(I think it's called a "V-matic 2," but am not 100% sure off the top of my head) and it gives you the option of using it as a standard shifter OR a ratchet shifter whenever you want. I'm very happy with it. Ratchet shifters are cool at first, but kind of a pain to drive with on a daily basis. I can see how they'd be a little better for racing though. I recommend looking for one that gives you both options.

: : This is probably a stupid question but here it goes. Im about to try to rebuild my transmission and i was looking at the B&M transkit and it says it converts the valve body to a full manual/automatic valve body. what does that mean and does it have any draw backs or problems?
: : and has anyone used it. also what is a ratchet shifter?
: : Thanks
