I have a Comet that I put a Grabber hood on, thereby swithching the front to look like a Maverick. Comet's have a longer hood, and I thought along the same lines you did: push the bumper brackets in, since they are designed to do that. So I took it to a machinist and he put them under a steam-press, and we found that no matter what we did, bwooop! they sprung back out again. I really think that you are going to encounter the same situation. I eventually had to have a 6 inches cut out of them, and then re-welded them.
