The very first thing to check is tire pressure. It often goes overlooked, and can cause erratic behavior. After that, look to alignment. You could also check the power steering control valve. Chances are it is the original one, and is probably worn pretty good. Check the stud that attaches to the pitman arm on the steering box. Is it worn and loose? There is a rubber boot around it, and most times the boot breaks from age and 25 years of crud build-up. Dirt gets in and does a number on things. You can buy parts to refurbish it, but unless you know these valves inside out and backwards, you won't be able to put it back together so that it functions properly. A remanufactured control valve will cost in the neighborhood of $100, and is money well spent.

: What should I check first if my steering is really unresponsive and she drifts a lot at high speeds (65+).
