You should check to see that the control levers (drivers side, the shifter hooks up to them) are properly adjusted. Have a friend hold the brakes while you move this around under the car. Moving it will shift between gears. (BY the way, im assuming yours is automatic??). Every car needs them adjusted once-in-a-while. Although your gear selector may indicate drive, it may actually be in-between gears (and so you wouldn't be able to move it). It's incredibly simple to adjust it, put the selector in reverse, have a friend hold the brakes, and move the control lever until it hits reverse. Tighten the bolts (tight!!) and have your friend test "drive". If all is well, you're off!
By the way, the control lever is right next to the kickdown lever, it's the same thing.
