: I spent nearly $200 trying to fix this same sound! at first i thought it was the front, so i got it aligned (which meant installing an new idler arm). Then i put new shoes on. Then i found out it was the rear. So, i found out my backing plate was worn in, got that fixed ($30 to weld). I replaced the shoes on that, and put new rear drums on (another $100). STILL NO GOOD!
: What i finally found out is this:
: The diffs are trashed! Put your car up on blocks in the rear, so the tires can spin freely. Start it up, put it in drive. Now, hold the rear right tire. Feel that motion? That's the noise. I believe the pinion needs to be replaced, but unfortunately that's pretty costly seeing as how you most likely don't have a 9" rear and that's all they really make them for! Not to mention, it's a long--not incredibly simple--procedure, and if you don't do it right you're in for more cost!
: I have talked to a bunch of people with this problem, i think it's just another corner ford cut on the maverick to tell you the truth.
: So, either take it to a diff. shop, or do it yourself, or find a non-maverick diff from a junkyard that probably won't have this problem.
: By the way, mine actually causes the whole axle to wobble and thus the whole car. The noise/shaking effect is unbearable!!!!!! What year car is this? Does anyone have a newer model that doesn't have this problem?

My car makes a sort of knocking noise when i coast in gear...doing about 30mph...sounds like and engine knock..but its coming from the rear...i was thinking it was a leaf spring shakle cuz one of mine are broke...but i dont think thats the problem after looking closely..because i took it to work on the car lift, lifted it up and put it in drive and let the wheels spin and it wasnt doing it anymore...as soon as i got it down and on the road again.....i heard the damn knocking..i have no clue what it is....the U-joints are in good shape...no prob there...i dunno....*shrugs* i have a '73
