You're both describing exactly what i have. I considered everything too....spring shackle, etc... and my main thought was that the shoes were rattling against the backing plate. I did replace the springs (all around on the shoes).

I thought mine was coming from the front originally, but one day i was on a deserted road (that's all there is in my part of town) and it started doing it. So, i unbuckled my seat belt and stuck my head out the passenger side....definitely from the rear.
I even went as far as taking it to "Brake Masters" to get their free inspection (figuring i'd just hear what they had to say and go home and do it myself--i know i'm not the only one who does this!!). Anyways, they called me out there to tell me i had a bent axle, and as i watched the axle it obviously looked bent. So i took it to a place in town, they put it on their machine and said it wasn't bent at all (and i even had new bearings on both sides).
Anyways, like i said it's VERY obvious where the problem lies if you put the car up on jackstands in the rear, put it in gear, and hold the right tire.
I don't know why but this noise is only audible on the right side, perhaps because the way the driveshaft spins?
The noise is only there while not accelerating, mostly while stopping for signs. It's also really bad in cases like off-ramps where you turn a complete circle to the right (so the weight is on the left side). Well, pretty much any time when i'm not accelerating.
By the way, mine is a 69.5 with the 8" rear. The 69/70 have 24 splines rather than the 28 on every other year.....
