Okay, so I bleed Ford Blue when you stab me...here goes:
The Comet was intro'd as the "first Mercury to ever have 6 cylinder economy" in the 1960 model year. It was based on Falcon mechanicals (like our Mavs!) It shared that platform until the '64 model run, when it "upsized" to the Fairlane platform (a 'grown-up' Falcon). It ran on this platform until it was 'discontiued' in '67 ('replaced' by the Montego for '68). It was 'resurrected' in '71 based on Maverick (Falcon!) mechanicals...talk about full circle!
Now for the extra credit question class...What was the name of the 62 & 63 Mercury "clone" of the Fairlane? (The '63 version was my first car!!!) ;-)
: You guys have to help me out here. I had a dispute with my mother-in-law about her mint condition comet she sold (dumb idea) in 1985. She said it was a 1963. I corrected her and told her that comets were not made until 1971 so she called her husband and he backed her up. Am I crazy? They sold it to buy a 64 Ranchero.
