Your problem is not timing, not spark, not anything ignition related. The starting fluid is replacing the fuel that the carburetor should be supplying. You probably have a stuck float valve and a dry float bowl. Do try to see if the accelerator pump sprays. If not, gently tap on the float bowl witha raw hide ir plastic mallet. Then crank for at least 30 seconds to re-fill the bowl. If you still can't get it started, chech the fuel silter. Good luck.

Ps:

Exactly what do you do on board ship??

: I am in the service and I have my 72 Maverick sit for two months while I was at sea. I returned and tried to start my car and it wouldn't catch. I sprayed some engine starting fluid in the "carb" and it would start but then die........i was told it could be the fuel pump, any ideas? Is there a site to see the engine? diagrams? I know virtually nothing about cars......... Thanks!
