By 1/2 the equation I meant that I had one of the numbers needed to calculate CR. I simply didn't know what to divide that # by to get the ratio. I didn't think it should be running for that. Just seemed safer with it only cranking. :-) Head gasket is going between 1 & 2. Oil & Anti-Freeze leaking from around HG in front. There is no trail of oil from the valve cover to the buildup around the spark plugs. My roomate refered to it as blowby or blowback. What kinda vacuum thingy???? Vacuum Tester??

Thanks

: ...#1 is a little low but they are all close enough to be acceptable. I don't understand your question about "1/2 the equation". What are you trying to calculate? The CR is a mechanical construct, that can't be measured on a compression tester. You definitely DON'T want to try testing compression with the engine running...LOL;) You don't mention the nature of your head gasket problem - what is it? As far as oil around the spark plugs: that may actually be leaking from the valve cover and collecting there. If you want to troubleshoot the engine, I suggest getting one of those vacuum gauge "thingies". It will give you a wealth of info. Good luck.

: : After reading up a bit on the compression thingy I have a few questions. First of all the book lists 8.7 to 1 as the proper compression ratio for my motor. My guage reads in lbs/psi. What's the other 1/2 of the ratio? I can do the math but only have 1/2 the equation. Book also says to block the throttle wide open. When I checked mine I had all the plugs out. Should I only take one plug out at a time so the others can fire? Book says engine doesn't need to be running. I'm a bit confused here. With the head gasket problem that I'm having I'm getting, in order from Cyl 1 to Cyl 6, 140 - 155 - 150 - 150 - 150 - 150. #3 is just a hair over and 4 thru 6 are just a hair under.

: : It likes to hesitate from a standing start after it's warmed up, unless I give it gas real slow, and doesn't like to idle when warm. Could all this be caused by the head gasket? Also the oil leaking out thru the spark plug threads.
