: to run 87, I'd say the highest you could probably go would be 9.5, but that depends on a lot of different factors. 93 octane will take you much farther. For 6k rpms, you could get away with not balancing it, but I'm doing mine for peace of mind, makes it last a little longer anyway. I'm sticking with my stock 74 heads(58cc combustion chamber), port the exhaust, leaving the intake port alone, headers... The cam is so far, the hardest thing for me to decide. I want 6k, but I want low end too. Good, high cam and 10:1 compression ratio seems to be best for mine.
RE: if you want the best bang for your buck, get a 87-93 302 HO. use your performer intake and carb. use electric fuel pump. make sure the distributers are the same. its easy to go with electronic ignition if your interested. it`ll be alot cheaper that machineing etc. the motor will take endless abuse til 6000 rpm. the motors come stock with steel crank, forged aluminum pistons, and roller lifters. its race ready with no real work involved. check into it. its worth it.
: : Here is what I'm after. I want to build a motor for my daily driver '72 Maverick that I can safely take to 6,000 rpm when I take it to the track which is not often. I just want to know what machine work I should have done such as balancing and all that. What compression ratio can I run with 87 octane? I'm planning on using an Edelbrock Performer RPM and 600cfm carb that I just installed on my stock 302. Also, what kind of head work should I have done? Or would I be better off buying some aftermarket aluminum heads? I have a '73 302 parts car that still runs but I would like to rebuild it for my '72. I'm on a very limited budget because I'm 16 and I have to balance school and my minimum wage job! :-) Any advise is appreciated!
: : Thanks
