: :It could be that your 20+ year old seals are just plain shot. IF your sytem is already discharged (probably is, if it's blowing hot) then YOU could replace all the seals yourself. They are little more than O-ring type seals at each 'joint' in the lines, and those are just compression fittings (the nut 'thingy' at each one) that 'unscrew' just like any nut or bolt would. This IS assuming your compressor is working properly of course!

: yeah, thats probably what I'll do, because all the freon is discharged. I take it I could get new gaskets (or o-rings, whatever they are, I'll have to check it out) at a regular auto parts store? While i'm at it I might as well convert to R134a. A friend of mine did that to his old bronco without much trouble, and we're basically on the same mechanical level. If it still doesn't work, I'll save up and take it. It probably isn't worth the risk to get that guy to do it for $60. thanks for the response, everybody.

...in a kit from just about any parts store. Get some A/C oil to lube them with, and the fittings. You might wrap the "H" block with A/C tape too. Let us know how it goes!
