John,
TL is right. You need honest-to-God Maverick engine mounts. You did a nice job of describing your engine bay, but just so you know, that 1 ft. "gap" doesn't get bridged with anything but the engine. There IS a crossmember that bolts to the underside of the front sub-frame rails, but it sits slightly further back. If you look under your car, you might see a threaded hole in each rail where it bolts to. I'm just guessing that you may not have this piece either, since your parts source is a Granada. If you need any further clarification, email me, and I can send you some pictures.
By the way, I haven't recieved any comments from anyone here regarding the FAQ article. John, maybe when you get it done you could share your wisdom?! :)
: I am in the process of swapping a 302 into my 6 cyl. Mav. I thought that from reading pretty well every posting on the subject that I was clear on what to expect. In the now empty engine bay of my Mav. are two pieces that are bolted and welded to the shock towers. They partially bridge the space between the shock towers but don't meet(about 1 ft. gap if memory serves me well). The mounts to the 6 cyl. were bolted to these. I am stripping a Granada for parts for this swap. I have the trans crossmember from a standard shift Maverick. The pieces that the V8 mounts on the Granada were bolted to DO meet in the middle. I assumed I was supposed to take the additional crossmember piece which bridges this gap on the Granada to do the same on my Maverick. However these pieces are welded in . Do I need them or does the space between the two sides of my Maverick crossmember remain "unbridged"? If I'm supposed to take off this additional "bridge" piece, how do I deal with the welds? If I don't use this piece how do I make the V8 mounts from the Granada fit the narrower crossmember pieces on my 6 cyl. car? I hope my questions are clear. I'm desperate for answers but I don't think the FAQ Sam's working on will be up soon enough. Any help much appreciated. Thanks. John B.
