low oil pressure is usually caused by main, rod or cam bearing wear. A high volume oil pump doesn't increase the pressure massively, it just pumps more oil, its more suited for high rpm use. Sounds like he probably needs a full rebuild, very least all new bearings as a patch until it can be done right, but this may not cure the problem.
