...I used 4.5" because I mounted them behind the kick-panels. There was just enough room to clear the magnets and get the speaker flanges to sit flush against the metal. I'm sure you can get a bigger speaker in there if you don't mind it sticking out. my preference was for a "stealth" installation - the speakers are not visible in front or back. The head unit is a very old Sanyo that fit the radio bracket with very minor filing. I used the original Ford chrome knobs, and you have to look very close to notice it is a cassette & not a factory am radio:)

: How big of speakers have you seen in the kick panels without clearance problems? 4" or 6.5"?

: : ...Radio Shack sells surface mount tweeters for the dash. They are pretty good speakers. I mounted 4" coax speakers in the kick panels. There are openings behind them that will accept that size. Personally, I wouldn't want to cut holes in the door panels. I think it looks like crap & definitely destroys the value of the panels:)

: : : I'm obviously gonna want to take out that center mounted speaker and install some new ones. First off, is it posible to put 6 1/2" speakers in the front and rear doors for a '71 Mav 4 door? and how do you get those window cranks off (I need to fix my drivers door lock) I sawl that there a OEM cutouts for 6x9's in the trunk, so I know I can put speakers in there. There isn't any way to dash mount any speakers that I can tell, Any suggestions?

: : : My plan is to stick 6 1/2" in all 4 doors. Put some 6x9's in the trunk and put a bandpass box in the trunk with some 10" or 12" thumpers. Power it all with 3 amps. One 4 channel amp in the front for the 4 doors @ about 600 watts, one 2 channel for the 6x9's and about 200 or 300 watts, and about 1200 watts for the box in the trunk. Should I have any problems pulling over 2000 Watts on the car? Should I drop in a new alternator with a bit more power?

: : : Thanks again for everybody's help. I've been amazed by all the usefull info I've gotten so far.
