When i bought my mav it hadnt moved in 18 yrs so the tank was toasted, i had to replace the '75 (16 gal)tank with a 19.2 brand new from pepboys. it came with a new lock ring for the sender, but not the sending unit and the float was gone. the unit was not available from anywhere so i took the sending unit and used a plastic medicine bottle that i heat sealed and water tested for the float. with the new lock ring it went in fine and works perfect. its been there for 1 1/2 yrs now and works fine. if thats the problem you can try something similiar.
