I remember reading a shoot-out for chain lubes on motorcycles. They tested everything from from specialty lubes to WD-40 measuring chain stretch, temp, etc.. - WD-40 tested the worst - it ran hotter than the dry chain did. It's great for freeing stuff up, but I don't use it as a lube.
