Yes, the Gas tanks on 1971-1977 were under the car...not in the trunk like earlier models. And Yes, there were different sizes. That is why if you put on a different tank, say from a parts car, always take the straps with you. If you have the correct straps, any year tank will fit under the car where it belongs.
