What does a resonator do and why do I need one? Wouldn't it slow down the exhaust flow?

: With Duals, you won't notice any "seat-of-the-pants" performance increase, but your gas mileage will improve slightly and you will "open it up" to take advantage of further modifications. It will also SOUND better. The muffler at the very rear of the car is the muffler and the one in front of the rear axle is actually a resonator...
