I don't know if the Ford Maverick will ever be back in the U.S. (doubt it) but it is still being made and sold in the U.K. --it's nothing like our Mavericks though. It's a little 4X4 like a Nissan Pathfinder or a Geo Tracker...

: NOO that was more like $2.00 worth. I had no idea that the pinto was trying to compete with the beetle. All of the advertizing I've seen from that era shows comparison between the maverick and the beetle. Well the beetles back Could the maverick be next?: : do you realize that mavericks are just pintos with trunks!(and a little less flamable too)

: : ----------------

: : Actually, the Maverick had its origins as a reskinned Falcon.

: : The Pinto didn't make an appearance until 1971, and was the result of a totally different development program. Named project "Pheonix", it envisioned using certain components (mainly engines and transmissions) from Ford's German and British subsidiaries in a package sized to compete with the Beetle. When Pinto was introduced, the standard engine was the 1.6 liter four cylinder from the British Ford Cortina. Optionally, you could get the 2.0 liter overhead cam four from the German Ford Taunus. The four speed gearbox was also imported. Other than similar looking tail lights (which, by the way, are not exactly the same), the two don't have much in common at all. Frankly, I consider that a good thing.
