Brandon,

Funny you mentioned this problem as I was looking at this same problem in my Chilton manual this morning. Sounds like the linkage is out of whack, don't know the proceedure here (at work) but on looking at the book it looks like about a 15 minute adjustment from what I've read. Don't forget to check the downshift linkage for proper operation after you fiddle with the shift linkage.

: I am a proud owner of a '72 Maverick 2 door with a 302 connected to a c-4 automatic. I recently purchased the car and found that when I shift into first to save the breaks while going down hills, I doesn't go into first and when I leave a stop sign with the shifter in first, it starts in second. The transmission does go into first when starting out in Drive. The trans seems fine anytime else. Is this what it is supposed to do? If it is, why? If not, is it a linkage adjustment? I'm a poor teenager and don't have the money to take it into the shop. :-) Thanks in advance!
