I'll recheck my sources, but I believe that, since the Maverick came first, it was also aimed at fighting the Beetle. From what I can gather, Ford's master battle plan of the era was to unleash the Maverick to keep the foreign car competition at bay until they could bring a smaller, more fuel efficient car (the Pinto) into the market. Judging from Ford's success with the Maverick, I'd say they had a pretty good plan. It's just too bad they screwed up their reputation by getting cheap on the Pinto.
As for a Maverick revival, I'd buy one. Customer demand worked to push Chrysler to produce the Viper and the Prowler. Maybe it's time we start a campaign with Ford to bring back the Maverick! ;-)
