Ya know that sounds a lot like tthe problem with my 302. (new motor and tranny there too) The started whines while turning it over and as soon as the motor catches KAPOW, the starter shears off the bellhousing. Ive had it drop and hit the floor once> I cant figure it out, nobody elese can either. I havent touched that darn maverick fo 3 months now

: Got a good one. Just rebuilt my 250cid inline 6 from the bottom up (complete rebuild). Mated it back onto the transmission, hooked everything up and Wholla! It runs like a (excuse the pun) Race Horse!

: Only problem is that when the starter is engaged all is well, on releasing the key to the run position it fairly screams. Even though this is the same starter that came off the car before the rebuild, I told myself "Shim the starter!" which I did, and the squeal got a little less. Figuring more is better, I added yet another shim! Guess what? Bad idea! Now it makes a really cool grinding noise (auto trans) that sounds like the flex plate teeth might be rubbing on something.

: I'm about to buy a new starter (even though the old one worked fine) but I have this nagging feeling I missed something when I mated the engine to the automatic transmission.

: Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for any advice!

: Pegasus
: (like a Maverick, but with wings ;^)
