Mopar Man, the very first sentence in your response was, "Since everybody else on here is HIGHLY biased toward Fords...." (and you capitalized "highly" as well). Do you know why that is? Because this is a Ford Maverick/Mercury Comet Message Board!! As stated in the opening paragraph, it is for Ford Mavericks and Mercury Comets. Of course we are biased...and of course we don't want to hear your Mopar speech. This is our playground, so go HOME!!

: : I am planning on doing an engine swap from a 250 to a... haven't decided yet... in my 74 Comick.
: : When I was young I drove a Camaro w/ a 305, and a Dodge Aspen w/ a 318, both with 2bbl.s.
: : How does a 302 2bbl. and/or 4 bbl. compare? It's been a long time since I've driven a V8, and this is my first Ford.
: : Also, if I go with a 351W, how badly will that munch my m.p.g.s? It seems like a 302 Boss would be a good compomise between the two, gut I hear that they are fairly rare and expensive, true?
: : I'm sick of losing races with my neighborhood ice cream truck! Plus, my girlfriend just bought a 69 Torino Cobra, and I am feeling a little castrated after driving her car...
: : Thanks in advance!

: Comick,
: Since everybody else on here is HIGHLY biased towards Fords, as the owner of a 302-powered Comet&360-powered Fury, I will give you an honest answer. Since you owned a 318-powered Aspen, the first time you drive a car powered by a stock 302, you will think you are driving a six cylinder. Honestly, the 302 barely feels like a V8 in stock form. As far as comparing it to a 318, such a comparison is a waste of time. While your 318-powered Aspen probably rocketed 0-60 in about 9 seconds, a 302-powered Maverick is lucky if it can do 10.5. My '73 Comet takes around 11.90 seconds to go 0-60. My '73 FuryIII does it in 9.30, and has 140,000 original miles on it. My first car, a '76 318-powered Valiant Brougham, sprinted 0-60 in 8.5 seconds in stock form, eve nwith the catalytic converter still intact! While the 302 is unquestionably smooth, quiet&durable, there is absolutely no comparison between a 318&a 302 as far as raw "cahonis". Your 318-powered Aspen would absolutely waste a 302-powered mav/Comet in a drag race. Severely to the point of being comic. In fact, I think that a Slant 6 is fairly close to a 302 power wise. My '71 Dart runs 0-60 in 12 seconds, and can spin the wheels easier right off of the line than a 302. Want a Maverick to run like a 318-powered Dart? Try installing a 351Windsor. This motor will probably be AS powerful as a 318, but not more. But why go through all this trouble? I would just find another Mopar if I were you. Unless your Grandma(or anybody for that matter) is giving you a Ford(how I got mine), I would go and track down a good Mopar. In fact, if yo ulive anywhere near Columbus,Ohio, this weekend is the Mopar Nationals, held on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. If I were you, I would go here, and find myself a Mopar!
