FYI: Service Tip:

This last weekend I finally decided to tackle the VERY loose steering on my restoration of a 76 Maverick. Looking into the engine compartment from above while moving the steering wheel back and forth, it was apparent that the Power Cylinder was moving back and forth where it attaches to the chassis. (FYI The power cylinder is the horizontal shock-absorber thingy that has the lines from the power steering pump attached to it). Closer examination of the remains of the bushing revealed about 2" of play at the chassis where there should have been _none_. The bushing had simply dry-rotted and broken away, leaving the power steering to float 2" to either side. Driving it this way was a real exercise in "averaging" where you wanted to go as the car would drift from side to side.Hi-Lo auto supply had a "Power Cylinder Rebuild Kit" available for $16.00, installed it, replaced the tie-rod ends and replaced the front wheel bearings (did a lube job while I was under there!) and now the steering is as tight as the day it came out of
the factory. Total cost? About $55.00! All parts were available new and in-stock. Anyone needing part numbers let me know as most auto stores do not have the slightest idea what a Power Cylinder is!

Ride On Mavericks!
