It protects the bearings in the mufflers. No, actually it is a CATalytic converter (or cat for short) and it gets real hot and glows cherry red in order to burn any gases that may not have been completely burned-up in the combustion process. 1975 was the first year (1974 in California cars) that mavericks had this device. in order to accomodate this, there is a "hump" in the floor on the passenger side in '75-'77 models. By the way; if you were to swap in a pair of bucket seats (either from an earlier Maverick or another car), you could have a problem mounting the rails for the passenger side seat...

: What the hell is a catalytic convertor and what does it do? All I know is that it does emmision stuff. I have a '74 Mav so I don't have one.
