It may weigh less but it does NOT increase horsepower. At least not the engine's power output. It can multiply the torque differently though by having a different gear ratio. Manual transmissions can be fun and I'm not knocking anyone who uses them, but the fact is that Automatics RULE. Nine out of ten drag racers use them because they're far more consistant, you get full power upshifts and it's easier on the drivetrain components such as U-joints and rear-end. You never "miss a gear" and you don't burn up your clutch all the time. But you gotta keep 'em cool with an aftermarket cooler or they don't last long.
