The nice part about having a C-4 Automatic is that it is "Automatic". It does everything for you!! You mention that you downshift to 1st when going down a hill to save on the brakes. You are actually doing more damage to the trans than you would ever do to the brakes. For example: Brake job...$50 to $100, Rebuilt transmissiion: $300 on up. My advice, put the car in Drive when you want to go forward at any speed, and reverse for when you want to go backward.
: I am a proud owner of a '72 Maverick 2 door with a 302 connected to a c-4 automatic. I recently purchased the car and found that when I shift into first to save the breaks while going down hills, I doesn't go into first and when I leave a stop sign with the shifter in first, it starts in second. The transmission does go into first when starting out in Drive. The trans seems fine anytime else. Is this what it is supposed to do? If it is, why? If not, is it a linkage adjustment? I'm a poor teenager and don't have the money to take it into the shop. :-) Thanks in advance!
