Yikes! As was already mentioned using your auto as a braking aid is NOT a great idea...brakes are MUCH CHEAPER than transmissions. Anyway. a quick check of the linkage adjustment can determine if you are actually "selecting" 1st at the trans. After you have SAFELY raised the car (ramps, jackstands, not a jack only...we want you to hang around with us for a while!!) have a 'pal' shift the selector through all of it's positions while you observe/feel the selector at the trans. It should positively "snick" into each position Park thru 1. If it isn't you will see the "slide" adjustment right there where you are working, hopefully it's all you need to do.
