...point gap & dwell angle are directly related. I gave up trying to set the gap years ago because I could never get the gap & dwell angle to coincide. Therefore, I set the gap using my dwell meter. You have to do a trial & error process to get the correct dwell, but it is a more accurate method.
Don't even try tuning the car without a dwell meter and timing light. Make sure you disconnect the vacuum advance line (and plug it)before setting the timing. I like to add about 4deg to the initial advance for better throttle response. There isn't much point in going beyond that. You will risk detonation & burned plugs, and possibly even a *loss* of power. Once you get this down you will be a true mechanic;-)
