:I'm also having an electrical problem, the pole on the solenoid (that's the solenoid right? black unit next to the battery) where the positive battery lead connects is getting hot and smoking! I noticed a black wire from the harness connected at this pole too, is that correct?
any help appreciated

Craig, I if none of the above solve your problem try hooking up the battery and removing fuses in your fuse box until the problem goes away. Sometimes that can isolate the section of the wiring that is giving you the problem, easiest done if you have a helper too. Also it was great to meet ya!!!
: : : Craig, this seems to be pointing at a dash wiring problem...I would start my search by pulling the cluster and checking things from there out. You mention the gas guage still "working" and the ALT light on...sounds like voltage is present when it shouldn't be. Did you smell the smoke inside the car or outside? I have seen many a vintage car (Mavs and others) in the yards burned from the instrument panel out! Just saw an otherwise beautiful '64 Merc Marauder in the 'yard' this past Friday that had just fallen victim to this...

: : after you check the dash give us some more feedback, also check your fuse box for signs of heat, melting plastic, some older cars also didn't have fusible links for protect. also check all your wiring for somewhere it may have rubbed it down to the wires. and also where your power plugs into the firewall, corrison causes allot of problems also
