: The easiest/cheapest thing to do would get one of those Summit engine rebuilds. Then, if your budget allows (the rebuild kit included EVERYTHING) get a carb and manifold. That's your best/cheapest performance option at this point, and it leaves plenty of upgradeability.
The last time i checked northern auto parts warehouse had the most inexpensive kits for what you are looking for (shop around). Also do not buy anything until you check out the engine how are the cylinders do they need bored this will determine piston size.Have the block magnafluxed is it cracked?Same thing with the heads. How are the rodends (the connecting rod end) will they need resized?Hows the crank? Will it need turned down? Find out all the answers to these questions before you start buying parts. So you will know what parts to buy or if this engine is worth rebuilding.Calculate all the costs then add at least 25%.Then compare it to already rebuilt engines.Unless you just want a project.Rpm engines has 302 short blocks for $515 and long blocks for $749 stick in a summit cam for $80 and a good used intake and carb and go.Sometimes with the machine work and parts you can more then double this. Not trying to scare you it's not that hard just checkout every angle before you spend you're hard earned money.
