A rough idle is usually caused by improoer air/fuel mixture; unless the engine has a "mis" which can happen anywhere in the ignition system (not just plugs), in which case you need to check the ignition wires, cap & rotor, coil, points & condenser (IF so equipped) and electronic module (if so equipped. Chances are though, that your carb is messed up and not delivering the proper air/fuel mix. A stuck choke can also cause this...

: The problems I've been having with rough idle have been getting ALOT worse lately. Plugs don't help and it's allmost to the point where it wont idle at all. There's some smoke on startup but not thick. Could all this be caused by the rings? Just had a deadbeat roomate move out and wondering if sugering a gas tank can do this? If so how can I find out if that's what happened? Haven't checked the compression since I did the head gasket last time. Also noticed the tranny filler tube had come unbolted from the starter, bolt was still in place, and appeared to have had some liquid poured all over it. I haven't had to do anything with the tranny since I got the car. Monday while stopped at a light I think I smelled a clutch burning. I've been using N & D as a manual since then and haven't smelled anything since. I'm planning on draining the tranny this weekend and replacing the fluid. Is there any other stuff I could/should check at the time?

: Thanx
