The normal Blower you think of would be a "roots" type, that sits directly on top of the motor. It compresses air with two "root" shaped screws driven off the motor.
A centrifigul blower is what you see normally on late model vehicles. It compresses air by means of a single rotor inside of a housing, and also driven off the motor. usually they sit to the side, like an alternator or a power steering pump. A hose connects the blower to the throttle body or carburetor.
Centrifigul blowers are getting to be more and more popular, they can even be used on carbureted motors. They don't create nearly as much heat as a roots blower (less detonation; engine damage) and can also be plumbed through an intercooler to provide an even cooler charge.
