license plate lights

I have a 72 Mav and it doesn't have any license plate lights on it. I have to go thru the inspection lane soon and would like to know ahead of time if I'll be needing them. When I bought the car there were none on it but I imagine cars weren't so prehistoric even in '72. Please let me know. Thanks!
