: : I'm not saying there's anything bad about a Pacer, it's just that their
: : stying was way out there. AMC did make some pretty good cars, it's just
: : too bad some of their stying left something to be desired (don't forget
: : the Gremlin), and they made the foolish mistake of trying to go head to
: : head with the big three in the muscle car wars instead of sticking with
: : their bread and butter compact car market.

: : The Vega, however, is another story. I'm sure the Vega went a long way
: : towards giving all of Detroit the bad image it got in the '70s and early
: : '80s. I once actually saw a bunch of mechanics at a service station all
: : go outside to look at a passing Vega (it was sometime in 1988 or 89).
: : The couldn't believe one was actually still on the road!

: Really? I see them (Vegas) all the time up here. Of course, where I live (Eureka, CA) is a pretty low-rent sort of town. The "No Shoes, No Service" rule really bugs most of our population.

Maybe the dryer California climate helps. I once heard a former Vega owner describe them as being built of compressed rust. From what I've seen (I visited a friend in San Diego a couple of summers ago), there are a lot of old cars still on the road, lots more than I've seen anywhere on the East Coast.
