: : I have a 71 maverick with the 200 I-6 and would like to know any way I can increase the performance on a students budget. It was bought with a B&M shifted C4 auto. Everything else is pretty stock.

: >>> Here's what you can do if you don't want to swap to a 302 (in order of cost): 1. Rebuild the head. Smooth out the comustion chambers & valve pockets. Mill the head .030" - This will boost compression. You will still be able to run regular. 2. Clifford research sells headers (both dual & single outlet) that will really wake up the engine. They are not cheap, but the dual setup up completely changed the character of my car. Everyone who rode in it was convinced I had swapped in a 289. 3. You can also use a 302 air cleaner element in your stock housing. It is the same diameter but is a little taller & gives more airflow. 4. Advance the timing to 10 degrees from 6 degrees. These are really the only practical mods for a budget. Multi carbs, hot cams, etc will be super expensive.
