An "easy" way to 'see' the difference between a 9" and 8" is the front of the "carrier". IF the bolts on the 'bottom' (holding it to the housing) can be removed with a socket and STRAIGHT extension (NO INTERFERENCE from the pinion housing) it is an 8". IF the bolts, on the 'bottom' CANNOT be removed this way (requires a "swivel" or a wrench because of INTERFERENCE from the pinion housing) then it is a 9".
