Well, assuming the diff works in the first place

: Hey, I'm not splitting hairs, but once when I was rear axle hunting in a junkyard, I came upon one missing it's ID tag. So I tried your method of spinning the wheel, and sure enough they both turned the same way. So I spent my money and went home with what I though was a real find. It turned out, however, that the darn thing was damaged internally, and that's why both axles turned in the same direction. It wasn't a Traction-Lok rear at all, just a messed up regular one. That's why I didn't mention this little trick in my earlier post because I got burned by it. Just my 2 cents...

: : Just jack the rearend up, try spinning a tire, if they both spin the same direction, you have posi, if they spin opposite directions, its an open diff.
: : Although spools are cheap, don't buy one if you do a lot of street driving, my buddy has a mini spool in his '69 Ranchero, and you can literally see the inside tire hopping off the ground when he takes a turn, also very bad for leaf springs too.
: : I'd recommend an Auburn pro series cone/clutch for 8" Ford rearends, (got one in my stang, the clutches are really tight, it skids just slightly when taking a turn) bad thing is they cost about $300, but most any posi does, also you could try finding a Ford Traction-Lok unit from the junkyard, and getting new clutches for it.
: : and don't forget to pick up some Ford friction modifier (about $5) from the ford dealer to mix with your gear oil, so the clutches don't chatter.
