It should be connected (on one side) to the "tree" for manifold vacuum and the other to the 'can' as you described. This supplies vacuum for all the "motors" in your A/C system. I forgot you mentioned it was an A/C car...I'll send along a diagram to help with that too!

: Thanks for the diagram. Whoever was previosly "maintaining" this car must have been making it up as he went along. The lines on the car are routed nothing like the diagram. now it all makes sense.
: The only difference I see is that my loop on the firewall has 4 ports instead of two, one of which is connected to what looks like a vacuum reservior. With everything else in the right place, I'm sure the final connections sill be evident when I change it this Sunday.
: So far I have found - wrong plugs -wrong gap -mis routed plug wires - obscenely incorrect point gap - mis routed vacuum lines.
: It does keep getting better. I guess this is the dues I must pay for not maintaining one for the last 15 years.
