I have a '76 two-door Mav and my battery tray was completely rusted out (so was the hood, looked like a battery explosion! :) Anyways, I removed the rusted tray, threw it away, wire-brushed and treated what was lef tof the fender area with a rust preventer, fiberglassed the area with three layers of fiberglass cloth. Once it cured I painted it and bolted in an aftermarket battery tray. Looking at it you'd never know it was rusted out! Worked like a charm!.

I'm working on a Maverick/Comet Repair & Restoration web site and have photographed this proceedure from start to finish. I'll let you all know when I get it up and running ;)

: :Runs in the family (ha ha) from his mother's side I guess. We're going with the V8. I guess I'm just an old fart!!!

: Got a body question for someone. I found that the battery tray and its base is rusted out. Got the tray, however it's a shame to mount it on that rusted inner fender well. Does the outer fender have to be completely removed to replace the inner section where the battery tray sits? Or can I loosen the fender just enough to slide the inner section out?

: Your son is smart; the V-8 is everything and more of what the six is. And the gas mileage is not signifigantly any different, providing it has a good tune-up...

: : : Here's an example of how good these engines are. When I recently bought my Mav, it was 3 quarts low on oil. It also didn't have any water/coolant in the radiator. The previous owner said that he would put oil and water in it so I could take it home. Well, naturally he didn't. I picked it up at night thinking everything was done and drove it 25 miles to my home low on oil and with almost no coolant. When I got home and checked these things, I changed what was left of the oill and added water. NO PROBLEMS! Not a tap, whine, squeek, rattle or chatter. Good engine! It's a shame my son wants the V8. I'd leave the six in.

: : : : Yes, it has a chain...

: : :
: : : : : : the Ford straight 6 is the simplest most relaible motor I have evr run across. Mavericks were advertized as being simple and reliable too .they had a TV add in which a bunch of housewives took one apart.
: : : : : :does it have a long lasting timing chain, it seems that the timing belt
: : : : : is a great money maker for mechanics they charge 300$ or more to put one on
