You sure can ... if it doesn't have a 'bolt on' cover on the back of it, it's NOT an 8.8" ... If it has a 'removable carrier' (out the front of the housing like V8 Mavs) and the bottom nuts would HAVE to be removed with a wrench (a ratchet and socket won't fit "behind" the pinion/yoke) then it's a 9".
