Yes, that's an old trick but as soon as one shock loses some air pressure or if you don't fill them both EXACTLY the same, the car sits lopsided. That is true about drag-racing; they do preload one side because the torque is always applied to one side. But we are talking about cars that have to go around corners & curves and over dips....

: If you hook up two separate air valves, you eliminate the flow of air from one shock to the other during cornering. This also allows you to preload the rear end if you like racing in a straight line. Just look under Stock or Superstock cars at a NHRA national event and you mimight just find an air shock or air bag at the right rear.

: I still go with getting new or rearched ( with a leaf added) springs.
: Good Luck saving the tires

: : They're all the same; but no one is faulting you for using them as a "temporary fix". You definately needed something to get you by until you can afford new springs. You did the exact same thing I did when I was a high school student. Before that, I tried "helper springs" (what a joke). I just can't stand it when people think it is a permenant fix and don't really understand the consequenses of what they're doing. Think about it. If air shocks are so great, why don't cars come with them from the factory? They've been making cars & trucks for almost 100 years. Certainly they must have learned something...

: :
: : : Maybe this isn't the best way to fix the problem, but I'm a highschool student on a very limited budget and I figured this is better than tearing up the sidewalls on my tires. I don't know if all air shocks are like this, but these are Monroe Air Adjustable Shocks. They have the regular shock absorber underneath and a separate air chamber over the top for adjusting the height. Is this the way all of them are? I do plan on getting the springs eventually.

: : : : We've already had this discussion. Air shocks will destroy the upper shock mounts on a Maverick if you run more than about 25psi. It's like using bailing wire and duct tape to fix a problem. They also leak and just like tires, need periodic refilling of air. the plastic air lines get brittle from heat & cold and crack. Also, when the car leans to one side, that air has to go somewhere: it pushes out of one shock and into the other causing poor handling. Air shocks have ONE purpose--TRAILER TOWING. If you don't tow a trailer, you shouldn't use them.. If one buys these new springs, they'll NEVER have deal with the problem again---EVER.
: : : : BTW--I got my catalog in just 3 days...

: : :
: : : : : You can request a free catalog online at http://www.jcwhitneyusa.com/ but it might take a month to get there and it doesn't sound like you're in the mood to wait. I'd give you their phone# but my dad took my catalog to work. I hate to bring this up again, but I just installed air shocks and got a good 4 inches or so with little or no loss in handling/comfort except what you're going to get from raising the rear end anyway.

: : : : : : Right.... By SPRING DAMMNIT!!! I will be doing the new spring thing... TL said they were running about $110 for the two sets plus another $18 for the shackles or so? Well then, even if I have to eat RAMEN for a month I'm gonna get em!!!!
: : : : : : I need the specs... I know you said four leaf but in order not to sound like the compleat ignoramous (and to save myself from the heartbreak of sending 'em back) I need to know, a) what to ask for directly b)how the hell to get a hold of them!!
: : : : : : Just curious... how much lift can I expect from this? I NEED to do SOMETHING that's visible on the outside.... :)
