as for gas miliage I got between 18 and 25 mpg in my mav, It had a 6 cyclinder and a manual transmission.
you didn't specify how much gas the car was using.
I have seen old gas gauges not work properly in all different makes of cars.
try filling the tank and then drive 100mi and fill it again, my guess is that the gauge is broken or the car is severly out of tune (if the latter were the case it would run terrible)
