Steve,

The only sealant I can think of should be on the nuts on the outside of the firewall. There shouldn't be anything like that on the inside. If this thing is still giving you trouble, I'd be happy to scan and email or fax you the page in the shop manual that has the diagram of this thing all apart. Let me know... :)

: I've done that. Even found 2 other bolts that looked related and took them off also. All of the bolts had a sticky white substance on them that appeared to come from inside the passenger area. My roomate said it was a heat protective type of sealant (cake TL?) :-). I'm not sure if that's what's holding it on or not. Is it standard/important to have such a substance in there? The book doesn't mention anything even remotely similar.
: Thanks

: : Steve,

: : Ok, there are four nuts outside on the firewall that surround the blower motor. Assuming you removed all of them, go back inside the car and look under the dash. There should be a sheet metal screw that secures a bracket on the heater box to the underside of the dash. This is probably what's holding you up. Hope this helps... :)

: : : Forgot to mention this car has no AC and so far as I can tell never has.

: : : : I decided to try and change the heater core while I was replacing the brake master cylinder. I couldn't for the life of me manage to get the heater unit to release from the firewall. I removed the nuts from 5 bolts that came thru the firewall that were in the right spots to hold the heater unit in. It still would not budge. I got the core out but kinda broke the plastic casing doing it. I'm going to need to get the whole thing out to put the new core in when it arrives and still can't figure out how to do it. The book I have says "Remove unit" so it's not much help. :-)
: : : : Any help will be greatly appreciated.

: : : : Thanks
