: With some expirience in rebuilding trannies, I can say that there is a difference between them. This however doesn't mean that you can take one off the six and put it on the eight. For the most part they are exactly the same. The only difference is that the one for the eight came with an extra clutch in two of the gears. If you were to, for example, buy the rebuild kit for the 6cyl version, it would contain all of the parts of the 8cyl version. You just discard what you don't need. So I assume that because they are baisically the same thing Ford stopped producing one of them and now uses the other for both applications. Thus transmission shops would only sell one type.
